What would you like to know?

Why Photographic Art?

Answer:
We are insanely passionate about Photographic Art. What other medium is so instant, so accessible and so wonderfully versatile? (Did we mention absolutely breathtaking as well?)

You can be a fine artist, a fun artist, a photo journalist, a photo manipulator, a traditional artist or an experimental artiste. It’s all possible at the Photo Art Gallery.

We love it and we know you’ll love it too.

How do I become a member?

Answer:

First of all join by clicking the register link in the top right hand corner. After inputing your information, you'll receive a cool little welcome email and a real physical pack in the mail (remember the mail?) introducing you to your global gallery and confirming your membership.

In the meantime your private Photo Art Gallery will have been built and cleaned out with the keys ready for your collection at your studio (an email link will take you there). Your studio (referred to as 'MyStudio') will act as your main control dashboard. Here you can determine the look and feel of your gallery, edit your details, access your Artists tools and review comments on your work. You can also send internal emails...or Pmails as we prefer to call them. You can also just hang out here and dream dreams, plan plans and generally do stuff that makes you happy. Your MyStudio has a door direct to your Private Gallery. Basically think of it as your organisational hub. Here you will find easy to follow directions as to how to upload your work and fit it out.

Can anyone become a member?

Answer:

Anyone who is passionate about, respectful of and inspired by Photographic Art is welcome to become a member of the Photo Art Gallery. As with any site you need to agree to our terms and conditions which explain your rights as a member.

What do you want from me?

Answer:

Remember that breathtaking shot you took a while back? The one that wowed your friends, wooed your family and made you wonder why photos didn’t always turn out so well?

Where is it now?

Our guess is it’s in the crypt of your computer.

The hard drive where all the other shots go to die.

It’s with all those other beauties that have been filed away because, well you didn’t quite know what to do with them, yet you knew they were too good to delete. These gems are exactly the sort of Photographic Art we love at the Gallery. We want you to share these and your passion with us.

We want you to get into it and get others into it too, become a member and leave comments, create dialogue, join the Ph.orums, learn stuff at the Ph.aculty (share stuff too), tell us when you like things, tell us when you don’t, sell, collect, share and dream photographic art. You can also get your work printed, framed or made into a fantastic canvas with options galore.

That’s all before breakfast.

To become a member, click 'register' in the very top menu.

So I become a member?

Answer:

Indeed you do. All great galleries have members and we are no different. Like any worthwhile membership you’ll have access to the very best facilities, environment and services. Respect is paramount here, for you, from other members and our team. Where we are different, is that we offer a global community all passionate about photographic art, who you can interact with daily. This is your gallery, it’s your place in which to relax, participate and evolve.

We want you to feel at home, we encourage you to ask friends in to show them around, and we invite you to feel like an integral part of this unique institution, because as it happens, you are.

As the adage goes; membership has it’s privileges, we look forward to sharing them with you.

There's 3 Photographic Art Galleries - Private, Public and Collectors', what's the difference?

Answer:

Ok so here’s where we’re lucky you have an imagination. Picture Photo Art Gallery as one huge, futuristic Gallery, just for you. Architecturally it’s breathtaking. You enter the door and the first thing you see is a wide hallway with a heap of doors. It’s predominantly white. The dark timber floors are highly polished, and the light is just right. A sweet smell of coffee permeates the air. There’s a huge Photo Art logo floating from the ceiling, the colours subtly highlight one to the other. The air is fresh and filled with a sense of anticipation. Chilled lounge music plays, the furniture is a kind of art in itself, (except you're actually allowed to sit on it), and the atmosphere isn't stuffy, it's energetic. The place is absolutely buzzing with Photographic Artists from every corner of the globe. You can mix, or you can enjoy your own space.

Then you notice the walls.

They are literally dripping with the finest, most exciting Photographic Art you have ever seen. Some are beamed on to slick plasma screens of varying sizes, others are hung traditionally.

It’s mind blowing.

Inspired you move from gallery to gallery, talking photographic art, viewing photographic art dreaming photographic art. This place is a world of invention and you’re a member of it.

Hop aboard, you never know what can happen here.

The next main door you see features the words:

Private Gallery

Answer:

Behind this door you’ll find there’s a private studio gallery for every single member of the Photo Art Gallery, including you. You can upload whatever you like to your private gallery, hang it
however you want and have people view your work on an invitation only basis. For example, you attended a wedding on the weekend, upload your shots and send an email invitation to interested parties. All they need to do is click the supplied link and they’re in your gallery viewing your great photography.

Your gallery is completely under your control. You can change your collection around, create new collections, categorise your work, create monochrome, black and white, colour and duotone groupings, create a retrospective or dream of your next series. You can also view your work as a slide show, write your story, upload to the Public Gallery, and apply to the Collectors' Gallery. You can pop next door to your studio where you can retrieve and send messages, receive comments from other members, check your rating and edit your details. It’s all yours to have fun in. Get in there, roll up your sleeves and make it happen.

Public Gallery

Answer:

Venturing beyond the private galleries, you reach a polished silver door upon which you see the sign: Public Gallery. From behind this door there’s a buzz of people whose energy draws you in. You open the door to reveal a busy setting. Artists and buyers are milling about and there’s a long stainless steel coffee bar along the far wall. It’s the sort of place that captures and feeds your imagination, enough to make you say ‘hang it’, and add your photographic art to the mix. After all, it’s lived in your head, then in your camera, and finally on your hard drive, or perhaps your private gallery, why not share it with the world?

The Public Gallery is the place to share and bare and even snare your work. It’s a world of community, fellow photographic artists from all over the globe will view your pieces, comment on them and be inspired (and in turn inspire you).

People who ‘get’ why you spend hours producing work, rise at ridiculous hours to catch the sunrise and become genuinely excited at words like megapixel, bracketing and exposure compensation, even if you don’t know what they mean. Yet.

There’s no better buzz than seeing your work in public sitting alongside other pieces. It’s a great way to grow. Your works (along with all others in this gallery) will be available for purchase to all who view them, in a myriad of formats from  prints, to canvases, to framed pieces, all to the fine quality standard they deserve. This is your Public Gallery, we want you to feel at home.

Collectors' Gallery

Answer:

After finally exiting the Public Gallery (for now) you glance down the main hallway. At the end of it looms a tall platinum door, on it the following words are etched:

Collectors' Gallery.

There is no doubt this is a Premium Gallery. You sense that as soon as you enter. The walls boast photographic art that can be summed up in one word, breathtaking. Every exquisite piece is part of a limited edition, of only 20. That’s only 20 physical prints regardless of the size, making them as valuable in their scarcity as in their artistry.

Each one is signed, numbered and certified by the Photo Art Gallery.

They’re the best, of the best, of the best.

There is no finer place from which to start collecting premium Photographic Art. It’s where you might find the next Max Dupain or Ansel Adams. Or become the next Max Dupain or Ansel Adams.

Photo Art Gallery Agents represent this work to collectors both locally and internationally. Such patrons include private collectors, hotel chains, restaurants, other galleries, public exhibitors and commercial businesses, and of course fellow members.

This Gallery invites submissions from all members and the work here is inspired. It is the work from this Gallery which will be seen on the Photo Art Gallery home page.

To exhibit your work here you're invited to submit your very finest to our Curators. You will be informed as to whether or not your work has been accepted within days. Upon acceptance you’re work will be uploaded and hung immediately. The standard of this gallery is extremely high. That’s EXTREMELY high. Having a piece accepted is the ultimate challenge for any Photographic Artist. You should justifiably feel considerable pride upon acceptance. (A short dance of joy would not be out of the question). Should you not be accepted please don’t be discouraged. It is not meant to be easy. A Curator will provide you with reasons for the decision which will hopefully assist you to take the challenge of trying again with another piece. You can of course display the work back in the Public Gallery.

This is a place to be inspired.

But wait there’s more...

Answer:

There's a myriad of other rooms in and amongst all of these spectacular galleries.

Lecture and tutorial theatres in the Ph.acultythe Gallery Shop, studios, news rooms, reviews of the latest technology and gadgets, exhibitions, competitions and people to help you, Ph.orums and the Ph.aculty. You name it, it's either here or it's being built.

Did you say Limited Editions in the Collectors' Gallery?

Answer:

Indeed we did. Photographic Art is after all, art, not wallpaper. As such all of the work sold in the Collectors' Gallery is a Limited Edition. If you like it, buy it, because when it's sold out, it's gone.

In the meantime here’s a brief synopsis: There will be a limited run of 20 prints per artwork, that's 20 prints only no matter what size the work. (This does not preclude it from being available for sale for future commercial options eg. packaging or advertising. The 20 printed limit only applies to wall art.) Whenever a piece sells the artist (that could be you) will make a percentage as will the Photo Art Gallery, just like any agent. The size of your commission depends on how much image info you supplied when you uploaded your art. Basically the better and more extensive description you give your work, the easier it will be for people to find, and appreciate so the more you will be rewarded.

Image info? Oh dear are my eyes are glazing over?

Answer:

We know, we know, ’image info’ sounds horribly left brain but it's really very simple.
When you upload a shot to your studio (Private Gallery), it will appear as a thumbnail.
Hover over it and a list of options will appear, one of which is to ‘Edit Details.’ Click it and you’ll be taken to a box which asks you to input information. Firstly you’ll be asked to enter as many search terms as you can think of, that can be attributed to your Photographic Art. For example, a beautiful shot of a tropical island beach might have such image info as: tropical, hot, beach, water, sand, calm, holiday, vacation, still, ebb, flow, blue, green, aquamarine, fish, tide, seascape, seaside, north, palm, relax, chill and so on and so on and so on.

As you add these words you'll notice the image info logo in the top right of the dialogue box will start to change. Each bar in turn will become bold as you input information. This indicates the ever present Photo Art Gallery Curators are hard at work assessing your efforts. Each of the five bars represents a number (from 1-5). The lowest score you can get is one. This means only one of the bars has become bold. This will only be the case if you enter no information. You will find there are several fields to fill in as you go through this process, all of which add to your image info reading. Once you submit your work to the Public or Collectors' Gallery a Curator will recheck your image info to make sure you've uploaded relevant words. Your rating may then be re-adjusted to it's correct number. This will only happen if it has been filled in incorrectly in the first place. It’s in your interests to spend the time inputing the correct and specific details about your work. If the Curator has to do it, it doesn’t count.

And the point of all this image info would be...?

Answer:

We’ve all stood in galleries and heard people try to second guess what was in the photographer’s mind when they composed the shot.

How many times do you think they get it right?

Well if it’s anything less than 100% of the time it’s not good enough for our members.

We don’t think anyone can explain their photographic art better than the artist who photographed the piece.

After all, you were there, it was conceived by your eyes, the final composition is your baby.

The information you input let’s us in on your insight. It tells us your mood, your story and where you think it should be hung.

It also helps others find it. Admirers, friends, and buyers all have a greater chance of coming across your photographic art if you categorise and introduce it accurately.

The effort is well worth it, your work deserves it.

Is my work safe from theft?

Answer:

Stealing Photographic Art is one of the few things that gets us really angry. It’s unacceptable and we won’t tolerate it which is why our Photo Art Gallery watermark is placed discreetly on your work. The galleries here are built using the very latest technology designed to minimise cyber theft. We continually scour the net to find the best security solutions available and will do so endlessly. Potential thieves are unable to 'drag' images from our galleries to their desktop.

We have Photo Art Gallery staff patrolling the Galleries all day and all night in search of plagiarised Photographic Art. Despite all their surveillance, no-one patrols better than our members themselves. If you suspect any plagiarism or theft please report it here. We will act quickly and if laws have been broken make no mistake, we will hit hard.

Who owns copyright?

Answer:

Put simply, you maintain copyright of your images.

You can have your images printed in a myriad of formats through the your Private Gallery as many times as you like.

You can invite friends and family to buy your work themselves through the Public Gallery at a profit to you. (Ahh, finally a chance to make the family pay...insert evil laugh here).

Other members and the passing parade of public patrons can also buy unlimited numbers of your work here as well.

Should your work be exceptional enough to appear in the Collectors' Gallery as a limited edition, you will still maintain copyright.

However, in this instance you will grant us an exclusive license to sell it.

This means you cannot sell this work anywhere else, publicly or privately. Ever. Why? Because we put significant resources behind displaying and marketing your photographic art, therefore to have it turn up somewhere else would be counter productive and upsetting to our, and your collectors. After all no one wants to buy one of twenty limited edition prints only to see ‘prints 21, 22 an 23’ appear on the cafe wall down the street.

If you have any more questions, we encourage you to read our terms and conditions here. We call it the fine print for fine artists. Settle in with a cuppa or something stronger, it’s a rollicking read.

Remember you can also contact us, or use our LIVE HELP button at the top of the screen.

How do we sell your work?

Answer:

With great passion, unbridled enthusiasm and integrity. Our Photographic Art Agents spend their lives seeking collectors from all corners of the globe. We sell on-line and stand in-line for as long as it takes. If buyers are out there, we’ll find them. We market heavily and behave professionally at all times. (Sometimes we yelp with excitement when we see an exceptional new work but most people just call us ‘weird arty folk’ and have a look anyway).

If you find something you must have and we’re certain you will, grab it. These limited prints will not only look magnificent in your home, they may well increase in value over time.

How do I make money?

Answer:

When your work sells you will recieve a commission, just like any professional artist. How much you receive depends on which Gallery it sold from, and also how much image info you entered when you submitted it. Basically the more image info you submit the more commission you receive. That's because you guys have given your work the best possible chance of being found, and we reckon that deserves credit.
The base price of all work sold through the Public Gallery is $50. If you have filled in your image information correctly and therefore scored five illuminated bars, you'll get your full commission which is 50% of the purchase price. So that's $25 to you and $25 to us. If you have only filled it in enough to receive one illuminated bar you will only receive 10% of the $50 - two bars means 20% and well, you get the rest.
In other words THE MORE IMAGE INFO YOU SUBMIT, THE HIGHER YOUR COMMISSION...sorry about the yelling but we really want you to get it so you make the most money possible. All work submitted to and accepted in the Public Gallery can be sold in unlimited numbers and is sold through us with a non-exclusive license.
Ok, so what about the Collectors' Gallery you ask? Good question you clever people...the Collectors' Gallery prints work on the same commission structure...ie the more image info you put in, the higher the commission you earn.
The thing to remember here is that the Collectors' Gallery sells limited edition prints only (20 of any size and configuration) so they sell for more. The first 5 sell for $100, the next 5 - $125, the next 5 $175 and thelast 5 - $250 each. That means if your image is 'sold out' or if a commercial buyer or collector wants to buy the whole lot in one go you can make up to $1625.00. Gotta love a bit of Collectable art.
The thing to remember here is the art submitted to, approved and sold through the Collectors' Gallery is limited and sold through an exclusive license through the Gallery. So you can only sell it here and only 20 times. This does not preclude it from being available for sale for future commercial options eg. packaging or advertising. The 20 printed limit only applies to wall art.

So it's up to you.

The Public Gallery with and unlimted print run and non exclusive rights, or the Collectors' Gallery with a limited (but higher priced) print run and exclusive rights. Wow and you thought being an artist was only right brain work...
Any questions please contact us.

How do I buy work?

Answer:

Browse the Collectors' or Public Galleries and we are certain you’ll find something exceptional you’ll want to put on your walls. Once you have, start clicking.

You’ll find your “Photographic Art Shop Cart” up in the right hand corner ready to be filled.

Having finished collecting just press the checkout button and you’ll be taken through to our secure shop where you can enter your credit card details, or pay by PayPal.

We’ll ask for your address, or the address of the lucky recipient you’re sharing the love with, and organise for your precious purchase to be couriered to you or them.

It’s easy, safe and happily habit forming. It’s also the best way we know how to start collecting world standard photographic art. Who knows who you will discover?

What are your guidelines on content?

Answer:

Art is by nature organic. Its styles and formats grow and evolve daily. It’s one of the
things we love about it. At Photo Art Gallery we welcome all kinds of Photographic Art from
traditional to new to never seen before. Surprise us...go on...go on...

However, this is your gallery and a public site, so as responsible citizens there are some things we simply won’t accept.

Pornography (both child and adult), art that incites violence, terror or prejudice and art that celebrates cruelty to animals or peoples have no place here. If uploaded they will be immediately deleted and if considered serious enough so will the profile of the person who uploaded it. If you ever have concerns about any of the images at Photo Art Gallery please report it here. Be assured we take this very seriously.

We are not anti-freedom of speech but we are pro-respect.

Who are these Curators?

Answer:

People who know, live, breathe and love Photographic Art, these obsessive experts are literally everywhere. Browsing through your gallery, wandering the hallways, virtually traveling the globe for the latest trends in Photographic Art, communicating with Artists and leaving no image unturned in their pursuit of artistic brilliance (it’s alright they turn it back the right way when they’ve finished). Photographic Art is their life 24/7. Don't ask them to dinner unless you want to talk Photo Art Gallery or you could be in for a very quiet night.

What can I do with my work

Answer:

Heaps.

At the Photo Art Gallery we hate the thought of your wonderful work languishing as electronic files.
Surely great work should be seen.

That’s why we give you the opportunity to have it printed as: Prints (unframed)...Framed Prints...Canvasses and/or metallic prints.

To see examples of real, live members, with real, live purchases go to here in the Phorums. You'll find them under Members Lounge>works from the Gallery.

The finer details of what's available are:

Paper Size

We can print your (or others) beautiful photography to any size the photograph's resolution will support.

We have a sophisticated device within the inner workings of this Gallery, which diagnoses the resolution of the shot you wish to purchase and how big it can go without losing detail. The upshot of this, is that you don't have to worry about ordering a shot at a size that the original file can't extend to. If it's not going to look brilliant our device will tell you. Phew, one less thing to worry about in life...

Paper Types

We have two levels of finish used in the Gallery they are both of a very high standard however the Collectors Gallery is the pinnacle of photographic art reproduction. Refer Ilford Gallerie Paper Types and Hahnemühle Paper Types below...

Collector's Gallery

Great work deserves the finest papers and that's exactly what you'll find in the Collectors' Gallery.

We print with the Rolls-Royce of Photo Art paper; Hahnemühle.

You can choose from Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm or Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm both are simply exceptional.

Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm

This 310 gsm mould-made, acid free etching paper, with the smoothest surface in the ArtLine range makes it ideal for images which are highly detailed in photographic imagery. The name suggests a surface similar to an etching paper which will also reproduce traditional prints excellently.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm

A smooth bright white 100% rag based paper specifically designed to meet the need of photographers or artists using digital photographic output. The heavier 308 gsm paper provides the weight of an art paper with a smooth calendered surface, which picks up every detail captured in the photograph.

Private Gallery

If you want to print some photos from your Private Gallery you have the choice of selecting any of the Ilford or Hahnemühle papers. For more information see the sections above to learn more about these papers.

Mat Type

Through the Photo Art Gallery you can order art with a range of Mats. The Mat is the 'surround' placed around an image. It creates a space between the artwork and the frame further emphasising the photography. How wide the mat, how many layers and what colour is up to you...to help you decide here's some further info...

Single, Double and Mat Float

We currently have 3 options which are a Single Mat which is a standard window cut into a mat board that your image sits behind. There is then a Double Mat which has an extra mat that sits on top of another and creates the appearance of two window levels. The final option is a Floating Mat which is similar to the Double but has a distinct separation between the two mats. This creates both a feeling of depth and a shadow line effect depending on the angle of view.

Mat Style

Again we have two distinct high quality mat types and their availability is based on the gallery you are in. Vantage Whitecore "Standard" used in the Public Gallery has one of the highest specifications in the market. The result is a superior mat that will stand the test of time, resisting the effects of acid degradation and remaining bright. Conservation mat used in the Collectors Gallery is one of the highest quality mat products in the market today. It has met the stringent specifications of the Fine Art Guild located in London, England and membership was granted in June 2004.

Mat Size

We have also given you the option to choose a mat size and at present these are 70mm, 90mm and 140mm. There a couple of major reasons for this and they are to allow you to have more creative control over your framing design and build. The other is to enable you to create a larger final product when your chosen image is limited in its size options.

Mat Colour

You can choose one of three colours of mat boards for your beautiful artwork from the Photo Art Gallery. Currently we have limited the mat colour options to three, these being generally the most popular. This list will grow over time and you can of course contact us with any suggestions you would like to see made available in the future. They are Basic Black, brilliant White and Off white which has a slightly yellowish tinge to it.

Frame Type

We have a number of framing options but at present they really fall under two styles, being flat and box. The name in itself should give you an idea of what they are but to help explain we have some images of the frame options.

Frame Colour

Depending on the style of frame you choose you will have a selection of colour choices. This decision is completely up to you and what you feel will best compliment the image. Remember the word compliment, you generally do not want a frame that dominates and over powers the image visually. A selection of images are available to give you an idea of what these options are colour wise but again the names should help paint the mental picture.

Finish Type

The final finish options for your art is either a glass or perspex and again you can make the ultimate decision. Glass is the traditional way and looks great but is heavier and has got more chance of breaking. Perspex, equally as great is lighter and much, much harder to break but can scratch quite easily and is also a little more expensive.

Each print prepared for you from the Photo Art Gallery is finished as professionally as we possibly can make it. Framed prints include quality wire hangers and soft finishings so you can focus on finding that perfect place for your new wall art.

Canvas Size

Longest edge is quite simply the edge that will control the final size of your actual image. The site will automatically give you the available lengths based on the image resolution.

Canvas Type

If you choose to stretch your canvas this is done using custom made stretcher bars that will not warp or damage you print in anyway. This process will give you canvas a real art quality and make it ready to hang anywhere you so choose.

Canvas Sides Option

The stretching of your print means that part of your image will be wrapped around the edge of the stretcher bar ultimately resulting in the loss of the image from the face. This may not be a problem but on particular compositions you will not want to make this sacrifice. So we have two more options being a stretched side and a white side which you can choose and will pay a small fee for to cover time. Best way to explain this is visually so please look at these images to see what the process involves: Gallery Wrap, Stretched Sides, White Sides.

Aluminium Size

Longest edge is quite simply the edge that will control the final size of your actual image. The site will automatically give you the available lengths based on the image resolution.

Aluminium Finish Type

Aluminium choices are very simple just like the process, you choose the paper type you like either gloss or satin. Then the print is mounted to a sheet of purpose built aluminium and laminated for its protection.
