Underwater photography
hi,

does anyone know an alternative way to make underwater shots. id like to do some underwater shots this summer but i dont want spend too much money for a camera casing. they are more expensive then the camera itself. anyway if anyone has any ideas or alternative ways to achieve these shots with a dlsr or point and shoot i will appreciate it.

Thank you,

Love

Nick

Re: Underwater photography
I know of water proof bags you can put your camera in, kinda like a really thick plastic bag, there only $100 bucks or so I think??? good to use for this stuff because you dont really need the stability of a proper housing if your not going very deep for very long........Its been a while since Ive seen one does anyone else know more about them?

Re: Underwater photography
Underwater photography is one of my passions, FAR better than staying dry Honez!! Ha ha
The bags Glen is talking about have had mixed reviews, most on the negative side. The waterproof compact digitals are definately the go (Olympus, Ricoh etc.) Just get one that has no less than say a 10 metre rating.
If you are really serous about shooting in the H2O (great group BTW!) then nothing beats a quality housing. Just don't compromise on the price because there's lots of dodgy housings out there. I borrowed one once and put my trusty 5D into it but was lucky enough to get the advice to submerge it in a bathtub first, lo and behold, bubbles started escaping and I pulled it out before any damage was done.

Shows how much I know about underwater stuff! listen to what the man Paul has to say, Im pretty sure hes been raised by dolphines or something, comes in to work still dripping, I'm almost certain he has webbed feet. Check out his gallery or his group youll see the man knows what hes talking about with underwater photography:)

Re: Underwater photography
I'll no doubt get shot down as usual by the digital police, but the Nikonos V is quite affordable. No, you can't take 10,000 shots and you can't see if you got it right on the viewfinder (maybe more important underwater due to the different conditions), but I always find if I take 10,000 shots it's just more work to go through to find the good ones. (I mainly point it out because I personally want one!)

I'd probably still go for one of the underwater compacts though. Or one that comes with a housing. Over at B&H they have , so there's definitely a lot of choice!

Re: Underwater photography
You wont get shot down by me on that one teve, they are awesome and a great way to shoot purposefully.
A lot of the pioneering surf photographers used them in the 70's and 80's. My mate still has a fully functiional one that he still uses and gets published.
