Well, the inaugural Melbourne Photowalk has taken place: just 5 stalwarts made it, Dan, Angelo, Pitinada, Sonny, and myself. It was a pretty wild and woolly day with heavy rainfalls sweeping down from the north, making everything feel a bit tropical - 19 degrees, leaden skies, gusty winds, big raindrops. We started the walk in clear weather but got hit with bursts of rain along our route. A couple of us had brollies that made life manageable but others had to take cover under bridges and wherever else they could.
In between, there were bursts of sun, a rainbow, dramatic lighting effects, and the 'magic hour' as the light faded.
Our walk took us along the Yarra River, past exciting sports stadiums including the new futuristic AAMI Stadium, the original 1956 Olympic stadiums, the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, then Birrarung Marr gardens and finally Federation Square. Lots of sports fans streaming to all those venues along the way.
Afterwards we repaired to 'Feddish' for some well earned refreshment and a catch-up, a quick look at some of Dan's shots displayed on his iPad, and then wended our way home. Everyone had a great afternoon of it, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of getting out with their cameras, and of meeting fellow PhotoArt Gallery members. The consensus is that we should do this again (and again), perhaps the next one in a couple of months - late Spring.
No doubt there will be some great photos posted here in the coming week, so watch this space. |

Here are a few happy snaps of our intrepid photowalkers.
Group shot on the Anderson Street bridge at the start of the walk.
Angelo setting up a shot of the 1956 Olympic Swimming Pool.
Dan setting up one of his HDR shots.
Pitinada and Sonny getting some shots by the Yarra.
Sheltering under a bridge during a burst of rain.
Coming out to find a rainbow.
Having some well earned refreshments and a catch-up at 'Feddish', Federation Square. Left to right: Sonny, Pitinada, Joe, Dan, Angelo.
All the walkers will be uploading up to 4 of their best images here, and after those have been selected as entries for our competition, I'm sure there will be some additional shots posted here to give the rest of the Gallery a feel for the day as we saw it. |

Grate work, Joe! I've not had a chance to do any final edits on my photos but looking at the RAW's I'm happy with what I've got. I've done some quick edits using the iPad and a few good editing apps. Here is one I am really liking while we where hiding under the bridge from the rain. Yes, it has been tone mapped on the iPad. Be aware I know about the black spot it will be gone in the final edit. Not for the comp.

Nice shot, Dan.
Also, could you please post the group photo you took at the start of the walk to add to our story of a most enjoyable and successful outing. |
