| Interview with Suhaimi Abdullah, winner of 'Pride of Place' Competition. |
|
|
If you are in the vicinity of the beautiful island nation of Singapore, and you heard a big thump this morning, that was probably the sound of Suhaimi Abdullah falling off his chair when he found out he'd won the Photo Art Gallery 'Pride of Place' competition.
Suhaimi's winning entry was 'My Livelihood.'
To say Suhaimi was shocked, thrilled, overwhelmed and jumping for joy is well, an understatement.
We caught up with him after his heart had restarted and asked him a few questions...as always it proved to us that with photography more often than not, the story is as interesting as the shot.
So everyone, please welcome Suhaimi Abdullah to the international spotlight!
T_P: G'day Suhaimi...first of all congratulations on your shot being chosen out of over 2000 entries by 4 international judges as the winner of the 20K Photo Art Gallery 'Pride of Place' competition...
Suhaimi: (stunned silence)...
T_P: Are you breathing Suhaimi? How does it feel?
Suhaimi: Unexpected. I am speechless. I'm still pinching myself, it is like a dream. Am I allowed to scream? Ooops, I am in the office, I am too happy!!!
T_P: Don't worry we scream all the time :) What can you tell us about your winning shot ‘My Livelihood?’
Suhaimi: I stayed with Haji Abdul Rahim Bin Awang Ismail (the man featured in the photo) for a few days in Kuala Medang, in Malaysia during a homestay program. Every morning without fail, he would go to his backyard to 'barbecue glutinous rice' to sell it to a local shop. The food would be a sell out within 30 minutes each time. He has been doing this for the past 15 years. This is how he earns his living. So I asked him, why not expand his business bigger? He said he rather keep it small and lead a simple life because he is much more happy this way. I guess in life, happiness with a simple life is more important than anything else.
And so there I was, sitting in one corner, watching him at work through my viewfinder in a simple place he is proud to call home. I am overwhelmed with his simplicity.
(And oh yes, I did taste the delicacy and it was super.)
T_P: What a fantastic story. This is why we love it when people include stories with their images. What sort of camera and gear do you use?
Suhaimi: I am using a Nikon System. My cameras are the Nikon D300, D70, and my lenses are the 10.5mm lens, 70-200mm lens, 12-24 lens, and 18-70 lens.
T_P: Another Nikon winner! How long have you been involved in photography.
Suhaimi: I started out with a point and shoot camera about 5 years ago before migrating to a dslr camera 3.5 years ago. A photo paints a thousand words and in itself I can tell a story with only a still image. I love engaging the audience this way. As they say, let the photo speak for itself. This is what I like about photography.
T_P: Are you a Singaporean local Suhaimi, or have you moved to Singapore from somewhere else?
Suhaimi: I am born and bred in Singapore. A natural born Singaporean...heheheh.
T_P: What is your favourite style of photography Suhaimi?
Suhaimi: I love capturing natural moments, be it street and candids/ travel and nature / or sports. I prefer to present my photo in a photojournalistic way wherever possible. Hey National Geographic, Sports Magazine, and all the big press agencies, are you listening? Hehehehehe...
T_P: Ha! Yep come on National Geographic!! Are you involved in any photography clubs/ exhibitions or galleries in Singapore?
Suhaimi: I am a member in a local photography forum, called Clubsnap in Singapore. I havent had any solo exhibitions before but sometimes my winning capture has been exhibited when I've won a local photography competition.
T_P: So here's the two thousand dollar question... Do you know where you will go for your $2,000 photography trip yet!?
Suhaimi: I havent thought about it yet. The winning feeling hasn't sink in yet for me to give it proper thought. I would like to go Antartica, Middle East, but hold on, I only have 2000 dollars..lol.......Any suggestions? :)
T_P: Yep we know that feeling of big dreams. Now I'm being hassled by one of our team members to ask you a very important question...excuse me...ah, ok,,, Jessie-the gallery wonder dog would like to know if she can come with you on your trip?
Suhaimi: Sure, but please provide first class accomodation for Jessie and me to travel together. Jessie deserves to be pampered just like me ;)
T_P: Hmm that's just made Jessie very happy. She's gone off to pack her D3. Well thanks for your time Suhaimi and your enthusiasm in entering the competition. Once again congratulations. Feel free to take the rest of the day off!
Suhaimi: Thank you so much :)
T_P: We will be interviewing the other place getters in the 'Pride of Place' Competition in the coming weeks, so stay tuned. Our second place getter is from country Australia and our third place getter is from The Netherlands. It's nice to have the world hanging out at Ph.Art :)
For an interview with George Cook our second placegetter head here.

| I am completely thrilled for Suhaimi and he deserves to win. I am also amazed he has only been a photographer for 5 years, but I guess it has always been inside him -- he just needed the external equipment to get it out. |
