Canadian photographer Larry Louie has picked up the title of Travel Photographer of the Year, for among others this amazing black and white image the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali. Built with wooden beams and mud bricks, it’s the largest of its kind in the world. He says of the perfect compostition and lighting in the image that "It was one of these moments in time that you couldn’t have arranged yourself.”

However, what perhaps gives him the edge in his work is that photographer Larry Louie leads a dual career. In his optometry clinic, he is Dr. Larry Louie, working to enhance the vision of people from all walks of life in the urban core of a North American city. On his travels, he is a humanitarian documentary photographer, exploring the lives of remote indigenous people, and documenting social issues around the world. Giving him a unique vision for his work.
Louie will receive a £1000 cash bursary, as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. He will also collect the latest version of the Adobe CS5 Design Premium software, and a series of Lexar devices, among other prizes.
