I have realized that in digital cameras, extraordinary devices help to maintain focus automatically. Those kind of sensors with some digital cameras change in in the area of contrast, while others use a beam with infra-red (IR) light, particularly in low lighting. Higher specs cameras often use a mix of both techniques and likely have Face Priority AF where the dslr camera can 'See' any face and focus only on that.
