SALT - a photographers passion

by Team_Phart 4. August 2010 21:04

How does a photographer manage to capture the essence of a enviroment rather than 'just another' landscape image. That was photographer Murray Fredericks mission when he began his solo pilgrimages to the remote Lake Eyre in South Australia. Now six years after his first trip director Micheal Angus has compiled the video diaries of a mans experiences from one of the most desolate and isolated places on earth.

Often spending five weeks at a time in the massive dry basin of Lake Eyre with only the horizon line as a reference point. Murray manages to overcome the difficulties of the harsh environment to capture a series of stunning images that show not only the vast empty vistas of the Lake, but colours that look like they were created in an artists studio.

On the projects website it discusses in some detail the Murray's aim for the project and some of the difficulties faced in making it. Also on the site is one of the triumphs of SALT, Murray's time captures bring the details of a ever changing environment into sharp focus for the viewer in a collection breathtaking videos.

Total Eclipse thrills South Pacific Photographers and Skywatchers alike!

by Team_Phart 12. July 2010 20:28

Thousands of skywatchers and photographers on Easter Island cheered as a total solar eclipse darkened South Pacific skies for four precious minutes yesterday.

Easter Island, famed for the monumental "moai" statues built thousands of years ago by the Polynesian Rapa Nui culture, served as ground zero for the event, which was streamed across the world via the Internet.

The eclipse could be seen in person only along a narrow slice of the Southern Hemisphere. The spectacle began at sunrise as the moon's shadow swept across the South Pacific, darkening skies over the Cook Islands, Easter Island and parts of southern Chile and Argentina.

The time of greatest eclipse occurred over open water, lasting 5 minutes and 20 seconds so shooters had to be ready to go and ready to change their exposures as it was happening. Just how do you meter and predict an essentislly unpredictable light? "As you go!" Exclaimed an exhilerated Burt Manarcor of Chile.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. The moon blocks the light from the sun and casts a shadow on Earth.

Skywatchers can observe a solar eclipse safely while the moon totally obscures the sun. But scientists recommend that people wear special viewing glasses during the partial phase of a solar eclipse and avoid looking directly at the sun, if even just a tiny sliver of the solar disk is visible.

The next total solar eclipse will occur in November 2012 and will be visible from northern Australia and the South Pacific.

iPad and me.

by Team_Phart 31. May 2010 23:51

Apple freaks all over the world were flat out falling over each other to be the first to get their hands on the new "it" thing to have. The new iPad.

On Friday it was Australia’s turn to whip into techno frenzy. As if the Australian Government had recognised Jedi as a real religion it was Geek Nirvana. People were queuing for hours outside the Sydney Mac store, with some having camped overnight simply to be among the first in Australia to get their hands on the tablet.

I was not one of them. Without being concerned with having to be the first in Australia to touch the shiny screen, I ordered one months ago and was happy to receive it around midday on Friday. To my surprise I wasn’t overly anxious to rip to box apart and calmly opened it at home alone that night.

First Impressions

It is gorgeous. Say what you want about Apple they know how to make a piece of plastic look desirable. I dare anyone to show me a piece of technology that feels so good in your hands and looks so good switched off! The iPad is truly a beautiful machine and it does exactly what it is supposed to do from Mac's point of view. It says you want me, you must have me, just touch me!!..... Once you do however you ruin it, but more on that later.

The unit is smaller then I expected but is still decent in its presence, and the thickness to weight gives you a sense of security. I don’t feel like I’m going to crack or break it if I handle it roughly. However I sense a stockpile of iPads with cracked screens will soon not be in short supply.

Once switched on the screen just looks awesome, the colours are amazing and it's apparent straight away this was born to be a tool of display first, a treat for the visual sense. It behaves essentially the same as an iPhone with the layout and icons being almost exact copies.

What use is it to us?

This is where things start to get cloudy. People are saying that there was no market for this, no need. People are sceptical because they wonder; what does it do that something else doesn’t already offer? People do have short memories, iTunes served absolutely no purpose what so ever, then the iPod appeared....Apple are masters at creating a market for their products alone, so just wait. I’m sure there is a reason we need this, Apple just haven’t told us what it is yet.

From a photography point of view however I believe there is already a market for it. Photos on this tablet look outstanding. The first thing I did was upload some photos and start creating albums and viewing slideshows. I was breathless for quite a while, everything looked so good, and for the first time in years I felt like I was holding a photographic print, only with a few touches I was looking at an entirely different print.

I can imagine handing this over to potential clients as a carry portfolio and having them oooh and ahhh over the high gloss images, and booking me on the spot. I can also see myself offering these as a product to clients. Forget wedding albums, have a wedding iPad!

Photographers are already offering Ipads as porducts to their clients.

This could become a dedicated photography tool.

Not that I can see. A quick search through the App Store will reveal hundreds of photography related applications, most of which offer basic editing tools and cool filters to apply to your photos. Whilst fun to play around with photography use in any professional capacity seems a distant vision, if not illusion.

What is offered however is a resource for photographers. There are some dedicated iPad applications that allow photographers to expose themselves to a multitude of daily professional imagery to engage and inspire. I am already loving the Guarding Eyewitness App that sends you a beautiful photojournalistic image to you everyday, with a pre existing back log of just over 100 images that you can sort through and marvel at.

I also see in the very near future applications to make the iPad an accessory for the professional photographer. Apps already exist on the iPhone that allow people to view and order images online. I will wager we won't have to wait too long to see an app that shows images in a professional portfolio setting with options to select and order images directly from a photographers website. Make bookings, show images to others, order prints and enjoy slideshows all on the iPad the photographer gave to you upon your first meeting. I can see this being a huge market in the portrait and wedding business. Imagine giving a bride an iPad as a wedding album. With the touch of the App Icon they see their images in a slideshow or on their own all within a skin that is branded to your business and with the touch of a button they are ordering prints for Mum and dad straight off your site.

What I like

  • The look
  • The feel
  • The way images just pop on its amazing screen
  • The ease anyone can skim through my images

What I don’t.

  • Finger prints!!! Your first greasy touch of this beautiful screen and it’s never the same again.
  • Lack of practical use for photography, although I never bought it thinking it would fulfil any actual applied photography use at all.
  • Did I mention Finger Prints?
  • People will say storage, but if you looking at storing high res images on this I would ask why? It is not a storage device.

The iPad has replaced my laptop at home, albeit I never used my laptop for any demanding tasks before. Simply surfing the net a bit and mucking around with photos as well as taking it with me to show a portfolio of work. The iPad trumps everything my lappy used to do and looks a whole lot better doing it.

However, outside the graphic artists I can’t see it being of any use to ordinary people. This won't stop it smashing all kinds of sales records I'm sure.

Glen.

The Most Amazing Collection of Cameras Ever

by Team_Phart 18. May 2010 02:27

I found this guys website after browsing some of my favourite international photographers Blogs. Stumbled upon this post from Chase Jarvis, and just had to share it with you guys.

Skull Camera....I have nothing else to say. This is a camera made from a real Human Skull. Wayne Matin Belger constructs all his cameras himself and to say he has a different view on things is probably the understatement of the year. "I create my tools of Aluminium and Titanium and Blood and Body to be in direct relationship with the subjects they are created for" Wayne says.

This idea has led to some amazing creations including cameras made from Infant hearts, and HIV positive Blood- The blood pumps around and in front of the lens creating a red filter. All the cameras as mentioned are created in direct relation to the Subject he is photographing and he has created some truly remarkable images.

To see more of these "different" cameras click here.

Photo Fusion: Yes or No?

by Team_Phart 6. May 2010 03:06

With the announcement of DSLR Cameras that are now capable of stunning HD video, more and more photographers are wondering if this is going to be a skill they need to learn.

It really is taking the world by storm in the video side of things, Just recently the finale' of TV series House was filmed entirely on the 5DmrkII. Personally I think some photographers would be incredibly naive not to take this video thing seriously. With the development of new portable devices capable of playing back these HD videos at just as amazing quality becoming more and more available and apart of popular culture. This is a new part of the industry I think people are just going to have to pick up, in a hurry!

Check out this example and make up your own mind

Photographers, this is your moment.

by Team_Phart 4. May 2010 23:07

There are a lot of photography competitions around. Some are good, a few are great. Want to hear about one of the great ones?

Artists Wanted is a concept designed by artists for artists. When looking through the rules, the question that seems to be on everyone's lips these days, "Who owns the work/copyrights after it is submitted?" came up. YOU DO, OF COURSE was the answer.

They went on to say, "The folks behind this site are just a few artists from Brooklyn trying to make real opportunities for others like us from around the world. We are not business people and have no intention of owning your work. Long story short, everything you submit is yours. Outside the main prize we look for unique opportunities for every artist who submits work into our system. We have developed an incredible network of media/gallerists/buyers and we want to put that to work for you. So far we have gotten artists international media attention, gallery shows and sales. We want to be connectors and to put our connections to work for you."

Want to know what you're playing for?

The Awards:

Our panel of judges including Photographer Lauren Greenfield, New York Times Photo Editor Maura Foley, MOMA Curator Nora Lawrence and JPG Founders Derek Powazek & Heather Powazek Champ, will choose one photographer for the Grand Prize:

  • $10,000 cash or 1-year FREE living at a $1.2 million apartment at The Edge in New York City
  • A Manhattan Gallery Reception
  • Airfare and shipping to and from New York City for the event
  • International Publicity

The public will also cast their vote and the highest rated portfolio will receive the People's Choice Award:

  • $2,000 in cash
  • A Manhattan Gallery Reception
  • Airfare and shipping to and from New York City for the event

Want to know what you get JUST for entering?

What You Get:

Richard Green's Photobook - Remote and Wild

by Team_Phart 30. April 2010 20:58

Do you ever look at someone's situation in life and think, "wow they are so lucky, what a privilged lifestyle thay get to lead!" Well 9 times out of ten, it was drive, ambition and working smart and/or hard that led them to such an enviable position.

Take photographer Richard Green for example. Richard was actually at the cutting edge of computer technology in the early 70's and was a pioneer in the communication between keyboard and  computer screen. Something taken very much for granted in this day and age.

After early retirement from his successful business career in England, Richard decided to take up the challenge of learning to fly a helicopter. Subsequently purchasing his own, and emigrating to Australia where he met his wife Carolyn. For almost 20 years they have made regular helicopter trips together to distant and otherwise inaccessible outback locations - their objective - to find and photographically record some of the continent’s most remote, wild and beautiful environments.

For 15 years his landscape photography was primarily executed with a Linhof 5x4” plate camera. With the advent of modern high resolution digital cameras, Richard now shoots exclusively with full frame 35mm digital Canon EOS 1Ds bodies and Canon L series lenses.

"I take full advantage of the digital technology to create multi stitched wide and extremely detailed panoramas." explaining further. "Most span a visual field of at least 180º, ie. what you would see with the naked eye. The exhibition prints are normally between 2 and 4 metres in length and are intended to give the viewer the sense of actually being there by my side when the photo was taken. My photographic technique is described in our book REMOTE & WILD."

The Helicopter

"The EC135, which we have operated for the last 9 years, is my pride and joy. It was manufactured by Eurocopter Germany, and is a modern twin turbine helicopter with a fenestron tail rotor. Both these features add a significant level of safety when operating in remote and often confined areas.

The helicopter's standard fuel tanks have a capacity of just over 650 litres. In addition, I have designed and fitted a long-range tank capable of holding an additional 300 litres - essential for those places where there is a longer than usual jump between fuel stops.

In its normal configuration the helicopter is designed to be a seven seater - pilot, co-pilot and five passengers. But for our trips the passenger seats are removed to provide room for our equipment. This primarily comprises the long-range tank and a specially designed fridge/freezer, which is run from solar cells when on location. When fully loaded, the helicopter is also stacked to the roof with camera equipment, camping gear, food, drink, tools, spares and emergency equipment.

Both Carol and I have pilot licences to fly the machine."

Book launches

Richard will be presenting an illustrated talk at 3 book launches shortly. These will be at 6.00 – 7.30pm in the following locations:

•29 AprilThe National Library of Australia, Canberra
•5 MayThe Manly Art Gallery, Sydney
•14 MayFramed Gallery, Darwin

Participation is free, but he needs to know you are coming. So if you wish to come please send an email to Richard at photo@richardgreen.net.au
